I assess my aims and goals for the following year at my appraisal and then set various targets and identify the tools which I may need to reach those targets throughout the year. My development needs are addressed at that stage and I arrange to carry out whatever training I need.

I also identify any areas of work in which I would like to become involved and work on bringing those to fruition throughout the year.

Firstly, by giving you plenty of responsibility for the files you are working on. Secondly, you are encouraged to attend external training courses. Thirdly, we have an ongoing program of "soft skills" training sessions which are run in-house covering areas such as delegation & supervision, time-recording and management skills. Nathan Guest
