Derek is a corporate and commercial lawyer who has for over 35 years advised a variety of mainly proprietor managed mid-range corporate enterprises and professional partnerships, in relation to both their business and their personal affairs. He has a particular interest in the primary healthcare sector, acting for over 250 GP and dental practices throughout the south and western regions of England and Wales over a period of 20 years.
More recently he has developed models for 'partnering' arrangements between medical and dental professionals on the one hand and commercial interests on the other. By way of example, Derek has acted for Medical Property Investment Fund on the appropriate legal documentation for joint venture arrangements with GP practices in a number of locations across the UK.
He has also advised on a number of other joint venture structures, using LLPs arising out of the abolition of the goodwill rules in relation to primary healthcare and the deregulation of the business of dentistry.
Derek is a member of the Association of Partnership Practitioners, and of the Committee of the Healthcare Group of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Derek is also a Fellow of the Institute of Arbitrators and takes appointments to arbitrate on disputes between partners of professional firms, and between shareholders in private companies.
