Partner & Head of Litigation & Recoveries in Bristol

How Can Ed Help You?

Ed leads our Litigation & Recoveries team in Bristol, which provides clients with a coordinated approach to commercial disputes, insolvency & restructuring and debt recovery.

Ed has nearly 20 years' experience in seeking to resolve often complex commercial disputes and in advising on other issues arising out of financial distress, business breakdown and insolvency.

Given the often difficult circumstances in which he is instructed, Ed strives to provide consistent, pragmatic and commercial advice to clients, often on matters which necessarily involve alternative fee arrangements.

Ed's main practice areas involve him advising on all aspects of corporate and personal insolvency, contractual and corporate disputes (including guarantee, shareholder and warranty claims), asset and debt recovery (including the effective use of statutory demands and winding-up-petitions), professional negligence and on claims involving company directors (including CDDA/directors' disqualification and misfeasance claims). He also has significant experience in advising on energy litigation, and regularly advises on procurement disputes under the Public Contracts Regulations 2015 (both in court proceedings and on a discrete basis).

Meeting Your Needs

As the different practice areas in which Ed works overlap and complement each other, he looks to provide you with clearly thought out and effective commercial advice. In particular, Ed looks for solutions that avoid protracted litigation where possible and prides himself on his straightforward and commercial approach to advising clients and to resolving business disputes.

Ed is often involved in assisting clients in resolving matters through the effective use of mediation, as well as in taking urgent injunctive action to locate and protect assets (freezing, search and seizure orders). He and his team are also willing to consider alternative fee structures for undertaking work for certain cases, including third party funding, conditional fee arrangements and damage based agreements.

Ed and his team are regularly instructed by a wide range of long standing clients, including a wide range of accountancy firms and insolvency practitioners, one of the Big Six energy suppliers, companies in a wide range of sectors, directors, independent schools, charities and shareholders and partners in dispute.

What You Might Like to Know

Ed is a committee member of R3 in the South West and regularly presents to clients and others on litigation and insolvency matters. He is also a member of our Energy law team.

In his mind, Ed is an active sportsman who enjoys, running, cycling, playing football and cricket and watching Welsh rugby. In reality, Ed occasionally does some of those things, but can more often be found coaching a boys cricket team at Keynsham Cricket Club in the summer or watching his three sons play those sports. He has given up golf as a lost cause.
