Can We Offer Wraparound Provision and Extra-Curricular Activities?

on Wednesday, 02 June 2021.

With a return to face to face teaching for pupils, schools are likely considering their provision of wraparound and extra-curricular activities.

The below reflects guidance as at 2 June 2021.

Current guidance allows out-of-schools settings to open for indoor and outdoor provision, following appropriate protective measures and systems of control.

Whilst there is no limit on group numbers for both indoor and outdoor provision, it is important to take caution regarding indoor provision, with consideration of recommended occupancy levels and the level of ventilation.

Grassroots sports guidance recommends the maximum occupancy of an indoor facility should be limited by providing a minimum of 100sqft per person. Therefore, if a school is operating from a premises which is not well-ventilated or in which it is difficult to maintain social distancing, it should have smaller group sizes (for example 15 children or less per group).

Schools should ensure they undertake a through risk assessment of all provision to ensure the safety of pupils and staff. Protective measures must be put in place and these will dependent on the individual circumstances of the provision offered.  The key measures that every setting should have in place are:

  • minimising contact with individuals who are required to self-isolate by ensuring they do not attend the setting
  • ensuring face coverings are used in recommended circumstances
  • encouraging staff and children to clean their hands thoroughly and more often - soap or hand sanitiser should be readily available
  • ensuring good respiratory hygiene for everyone by promoting the ‘catch it, bin it, kill it’ approach
  • cleaning frequently touched surfaces more than usual
  • increased cleaning of toilets and washrooms
  • using social distancing to reduce contact and mixing between groups of children
  • keeping children in the same bubbles they are in during the school day where possible, or otherwise in small, consistent groups
  • keeping occupied spaces well ventilated
  • promoting and engaging with the NHS Test and Trace process
  • managing and reporting confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19)
  • containing any outbreak by following local health protection team advice
