National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage Update

on Thursday, 01 April 2021.

On 1 April 2021, the national minimum wage and national living wage rates increased as we detail in this article.

Rates

The national living wage has increased by 2.2% for workers aged 25 and over and this age bracket has also been extended to 23 and 24 year olds.

  • Age 23 or over (NLW rate): £8.91 (2.2% increase from £8.72).
  • Age 21 to 22: £8.36 (2% increase from £8.20).
  • Age 18 to 20: £6.56 (1.7% increase from £6.45).
  • Age 16 to 17: £4.62 (1.5% increase from £4.55).
  • Apprentice rate: £4.30 (3.6% increase from £4.15).
  • Accommodation offset £8.36 per week (2% increase from £8.20).

Records

From 1 April 2021, the period for which employers must keep records which identify whether their workers are being paid the correct minimum wage rate has been extended from three to six years. This extension applies to records made before 1 April 2021 if employers were required to keep such records immediately before 1 April 2021.

Employers should check their privacy notice or retention policy to ensure they are updated to reflect this change, where necessary. Employers should have a system in place to ensure the relevant minimum wage rates are being paid and records are retained for the relevant period.
