Number of Employment Tribunal Claims Continues to Fall

on Friday, 19 June 2015.

The Ministry of Justice has published statistics on employment tribunal claims for the period between January to March 2015.

The statistics indicate that claims are continuing to decline, a trend which is largely attributed to the introduction of employment tribunal fees in July 2013.

The statistics show that the number of single claims received by the employment tribunal had decreased by 25% from the same period in 2013. Overall there has been a 52% decrease in single claims in 2014/15 compared to 2013/14.

The number of multiple claim cases, which are cases that involve more than one complaint against the same employer, increased threefold from the same period last year. However it should be noted that the trends in multiple claims have generally proved to be more volatile than single claims.

The Ministry of Justice also published information on fee remission applications, which are submitted when an applicant considers that they cannot afford the employment tribunal fees on the basis that they are on benefits or only have a low income. The statistics show that 43% of applications for issue fee remission were successful (or partially successful) during 2014/15, whereas 76% of hearing fee remission applications were granted.
