Update - Tribunal Quarterly Statistics Published for July - September 2015
The Employment Tribunal quarterly statistics for July to September 2015 published by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) show a continued reduction in the number of claims.
During this quarter, tribunals received only 4% more single claims than during the same period in 2014. Almost double the number of multiple claims were received as compared with last year, however it is worth noting that this statistic has been distorted by the recent receipt of two large multiple claim cases, totalling 9,508 age discrimination and equal pay claims.
Tribunals disposed (through claims being withdrawn, settled, dismissed, transferred or being decided at a hearing) of 9,157 claims during this period. This is 39% fewer than in the same period in 2014 and the lowest number of disposals since 2009 when the statistics were first published. Single claims made up 41% of the disposals, an 18% reduction when compared with the same period last year. The remaining 59% was made up of multiple claims, a 48% reduction as compared with last year.
Of the disposed claims, 18% were connected with unauthorised deductions, 15% were for equal pay and 14% were for unfair dismissal.
During this July quarter, there has been a 13% increase in issue fee remissions and a 7% increase in hearing fee remissions on last year. Of these, 2,107 issue fee remission applications were submitted, with 57% being fully or partially successful. 669 hearing fee remission applications were submitted, of which over 83% were either fully or partially successful.
The statistics show the continued reduced number of claims being presented to employment tribunals since the introduction of employment tribunal fees.
