The Term 'Apprenticeship' Now Legally Protected

on Thursday, 20 August 2015.

On 14 June 2015 the government confirmed plans to make the term 'apprenticeship' protected, providing that any unauthorised use of the term would be illegal.

The intention behind this plan is ensure that apprenticeships are a reputable and recognised career route equivalent to degrees and that employers are meeting the necessary requirements for providing apprenticeships. All apprenticeship jobs will have to include at least one year's training and fulfil other requirements.

Protecting the term will allow the government to take action against employers using the term inappropriately to provide inadequate 'apprenticeships' which do not meet the necessary requirements, for example paying less than the National Minimum Wage without providing proper and adequate training.

The government pledged to create three million apprenticeships by 2020 and this commitment will also be enshrined in law.
