This year has been busy for online pharmacy owners. In April, the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) released guidance outlining a number of requirements that online pharmacies must meet.
The regulator has been trying to keep a grip on the fast-growing sector, which has seen a rapid increase in the numbers of businesses and pharmacist prescribers employed by them.
In February, I predicted that with the GPhC revamping the way it inspects and regulates pharmacies, unannounced inspections would become prevalent. Indeed, since April, there appears to have been a concerted effort to target online pharmacies and assess their compliance.
Particularly in their sights are those the GPhC perceives to be potentially placing patients at risk by prioritising profit over safety and failing to demonstrate compliance with the requisite safeguards.
