A-Level U-Turn - Legal Implications for Universities

on Wednesday, 19 August 2020.

The announcement on Monday that A-level results will be based on teacher-assessed grades rather than Ofqual's algorithm and that the cap on student numbers has been suspended has thrown this year's already difficult admissions process into disarray.

You may now be wondering about your legal obligations, including the following questions:

  • What are the contractual implications for universities?
  • Are you legally required to honour conditional offers?
  • Can you defer places until next year?
  • What legal challenges may you face?
  • How can you increase student numbers whilst still complying with coronavirus health and safety requirements?

We would be happy to advise you on these matters and support you through this challenging time.
