Will the PharmaScan Database Revolutionise New Medicine Access?

on Friday, 17 January 2020.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has launched the UK PharmaScan database, the prime source of intelligence on new medicines, indications and formulations and in-licensed medicines in clinical development.

The database provides this information for NHS horizon scanning organisations up to three years before the medicines launch in the UK (or, if earlier, from the start of Phase III clinical development).

It enables pharma businesses to consolidate information needed to support NHS budget and service planning according to customers’ needs.

UK PharmaScan also allows pharma businesses to keep data up to date so horizon scanning organisations have complete and accurate information available to them from a reliable source.

The system has been introduced to improve the quality, timeliness and consistency of the horizon scanning information used by the NHS to enable better forward planning and faster uptake of new medicines. This in turn will enable NHS patients to benefit early from new medicines. Advanced information also enables earlier decision-making and budget allocation.

Participation in UK PharmaScan is voluntary, but it is free to all pharmaceutical businesses wishing to register. Any pharma businesses wishing to register can do so on the PharmaScan website.

Comment

This is another useful innovation to help with market access and early uptake of medicines in the UK, which benefits pharma, payers and patients alike.
