Number of Mhealth Apps Now Surpasses 165,000

on Friday, 15 April 2016.

The number of mobile health (or mhealth) apps has reached 165,000.

That is according to figures released from IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics. One quarter of mhealth apps target treatment management and chronic disease. Over 65% are focused on fitness and wellness. The study revealed that patient retention rates on clinical trials was much higher when the patient was prescribed with an app.

But the question remains: how can users know which are the best apps with so many out there, and which have reliable protection for their sensitive personal data?

Murray Aitken, Executive director of the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics, commented: “While much progress has been made over the past two years, mHealth apps are still far from being a fully integrated component of healthcare delivery. Healthcare providers are actively addressing the remaining barriers. These include developing and adopting trusted platforms for ongoing apps curation and evaluation, creating practical reimbursement models and ensuring true interoperability within and across healthcare systems.”
