How to Discipline a Colleague

Handling disciplinary issues within your firm can be difficult.  Following well drafted procedures is a good starting point but ensuring fairness and consistency throughout the process is also crucial.

In this session we will talk you through the process to be followed when handling a disciplinary issue and will cover some of the tricky areas such as investigations, suspension, managing witnesses, counter grievances and considering when to report to the SRA.

This interactive session will use practical examples and case studies to take you through the topic.

Speakers

Caitlin Anniss, Narrow Quay HR
Sarah Martin, Narrow Quay HR

Both Caitlin and Sarah are former employment lawyers from VWV who now run Narrow Quay HR, the HR consultancy arm of VWV.

Cracking the Code (to SRA Compliance)

Your Guide to the new SRA Codes of Conduct, Standards and Regulations and Enforcement Policy

With the SRA introducing new Codes of Conduct, Standards and Regulations and enforcement policy on 25 November 2019, this is a crucial time for COLPs, COFAs, and all solicitors.

What’s changed?

  • There are completely new sections
  • New provisions to reflect changes in legal services
  • New rule to allow self-employed solicitors to provide legal services to the public
  • The Principles, comprising “the fundamental tenets of ethical behaviour” have been updated
  • The Code of Conduct has been modernised to make explicit the approach of the SRA
  • Specific requirements for COLPs and COFAs are detailed
  • The prescriptive Accounts Rules have been simplified
  • There are new Regulatory and Disciplinary Procedure Rules

The seminar will consider how the new codes will affect your firm, what new working practices you may have to introduce, how your manuals & other regulatory materials will need to be updated and what additional staff training will be required

As well as updating you on the changes we will also discuss how they will affect your practice and how you might be able to benefit from them:

  • Can you take advantage of the more liberal practice structures?
  • What training is needed?
  • How will this affect how your compliance and risk function operates?
  • What documents will need amending?
