Safer recruitment and inspection compliance for academies

Safer recruitment is central to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and forms a key aspect of the inspection process. Schools must ensure that they properly carry out, record and evidence a raft of pre-appointment checks whether recruiting staff or entering into commercial agreements with third parties.

Understanding this area is fundamental to a successful inspection and to ensuring the safety and welfare of current and future pupils.

How we can help

We have a wealth of sector specific expertise and experience of safer recruitment and the inspection process, including:

  • advising schools on their legal and regulatory requirements when appointing teaching staff, support staff and governors, engaging volunteers, using supply agencies or contractors
  • assistance with preparing for inspection
  • attending inspections to provide on the spot regulatory advice and support
  • providing post-inspection advice and support including: conducting factual accuracy checks; making representations to the inspectorate; drafting action plans; challenging inspection findings; and implementing compliant future practice
  • providing schools with compliant template recruitment documentation
  • reviewing commercial contracts to ensure safeguarding requirements are met.

Safer recruitment training

Schools are now free to choose what safer recruitment training they attend, provided it covers the content of Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE). However, the safer recruitment legal framework is complex and the subject of frequent change and it is therefore all the more important that schools receive training which keeps them up to date with current legal and regulatory requirements.

Our Safer Recruitment Training sessions cover KCSIE as well as practical recruitment issues, pre-employment checks, regulated activity, dealing with allegations of abuse against staff and reporting obligations.

For further information regarding any of the above, please contact Richard Hewitt on 0117 314 5320.
