Our expertise

Our team offers expert guidance in Wills, Trusts, LPAs, and Inheritance Tax Planning, with many solicitors recognised as specialists by the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.

We focus on tailored solutions, addressing sensitive issues such as mental capacity and vulnerable beneficiaries with care and professionalism. By working closely with trusted independent financial advisors, we provide a seamless, multidisciplinary approach to meet your needs.

Clients value our personalised advice, attention to detail, and proven ability to safeguard what matters most. With us by your side, you can plan your future with confidence and peace of mind.

Our team advises on the following areas:

Wills are at the centre of any succession plan and a badly drafted Will can lead to costly and drawn out disputes. A thoughtfully drafted Will ensures your wishes are honoured, and your loved ones are cared for. Our expert solicitors, who advise on and draft Wills, provide tailored advice to suit your circumstances, including blended families, vulnerable beneficiaries, and overseas assets.

We can assist with minimising inheritance tax, protecting family wealth, and planning for business or agricultural assets. For those considering lifetime gifts, we offer guidance on tax-efficient transfers and trusts.

Whether you need a standard Will, Living Will, or advice regarding a statutory Will, we are here to support you. Should disputes arise after death, our team also provides skilled representation to resolve matters with care and professionalism.

When drafting your Will, choosing your executors is a key decision and one which is not always given sufficient thought.  The ultimate remedy for choosing the wrong executor can mean a costly court application for their removal, so choosing wisely is important.

Through the VWV Executor and Trustee Company ('VWETC') we offer the option of professionally appointed Executors. Appointing professional Executors can reduce the burden on family and loved ones. As an independent professional executor/ trustee, VWETC ensures that:

  • there is independent professional scrutiny of the administration of the estate or management of the trust
  • non-professional executors/trustees are relieved of the significant statutory duty of care imposed on them
  • early signs of possible challenges to Wills are identified and an impartial view is given in cases where conflicts arise, or family members find decision-making difficult
  • continuity of trusteeship is guaranteed, through the company structure.

Effective planning protects your assets, meets your financial goals, and provides for loved ones. We develop tailored strategies for inheritance tax, succession planning, and wealth preservation.

Our expertise includes lifetime gifting, trust creation, and safeguarding family businesses or agricultural assets. By structuring plans to shield wealth from life events like divorce or bankruptcy, we help secure your legacy.

With a collaborative approach, we integrate legal and financial advice to deliver peace of mind, ensuring your estate is optimised for the future while minimising potential future tax burdens.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) ensures your affairs are managed by someone you trust if you lose capacity. We will guide you through creating LPAs tailored to your needs, including:

  • LPA for Property and Financial Affairs: Managing assets, paying bills, and handling financial decisions
  • LPA for Health and Welfare: Making healthcare and living arrangement decisions on your behalf.

Our team offers compassionate support, especially in sensitive situations like disputes or capacity assessments. A professionally drafted LPA safeguards your interests, reduces family conflicts, and ensures your wishes are respected.

In addition to our LPA services, we also handle contested applications, including Court of Protection hearings, where we can assist in bringing or opposing applications.

If someone you care about is no longer able to manage their affairs, our experienced solicitors provide expert, compassionate guidance. We assist with appointing or replacing Deputies or Attorneys, resolving disputes over Powers of Attorney, and creating statutory Wills. Specialising in contested and sensitive matters, we help navigate family conflicts with care and decisiveness.

Trusts are powerful tools to protect assets, manage wealth, and plan for the future. We help you establish and administer trusts designed to safeguard assets, shelter assets from inheritance tax, or support charitable and family causes.

For families with disabled beneficiaries, we specialise in creating trusts that secure financial stability while preserving means-tested benefits. Our team also advises trustees on their duties, helping them fulfil their obligations and avoid liabilities.

With our professional trustee company, we offer impartial oversight and reduce the risk of family disputes. Together, we will ensure your assets are managed securely and distributed according to your wishes.

Our work highlights

1

Lifetime tax planning

We acted for a client with significant assets to restructure their estate which comprised five properties and investments, following the death of his wife and the administration of her estate. We advised on various aspects of the ownership of the properties, including Declarations of Trust where appropriate. The significant health issues of our client's sons required particularly sensitive handling in terms of lifetime gifts and future planning.

This matter highlights our ability to take a wide view of family dynamics and consider the best interests of all involved, to arrive at a satisfactory conclusion.

2

Tax Advice on New Four-Year Foreign Income and Gains (FIG) Regime to a US Client

Provided tax advice to the client (with assets of £15 million) who was considering a return to the UK after two decades. The client sought guidance on their income and gains tax position in light of recent changes to the UK’s non-domicile rules.

We analysed the new regulations, assessed their potential impact and delivered tailored advice to address their concerns.

3

£8.6 million estate included properties, shares, investments, and national heritage porcelain

Complexities arose from significant lifetime gifting, liquidity issues as the Estate faced a £3m Inheritance Tax bill, minority shareholdings requiring valuation discounts, joint property ownership, unsettled loans, and heritage exemptions.

Strategic tax planning and valuation adjustments helped reduce liabilities and administrative challenges.
