Beauty Treatments - High Fashion or High Risk?

29 Jul 2025

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute has released important guidance on “at home” beauty treatments, and the risks that are posed in using them. Beauty treatments such as lash lifts and manicures are becoming more and more accessible at home, with kits that appear to be great value for money being sold online. But do you know the risks you are exposing yourself to by using them?

There has been a considerable rise in the number of injuries that have been sustained due to beauty treatments, such as corrosive burns to skin, infections, and even sadly a reported death. It is extremely important therefore to do your research before undergoing any beauty treatment, whether at home or at a beauty salon.

Key things to look out for include:

  1. Has the “at home” product been tested and approved by dermatologists?
  2. What are the ingredients in the “at home” product, are they safe to use?
  3. Is the salon professional licensed to undertake the beauty treatment? What training have they had?
  4. If the treatment involves injections, such as botox, is the salon professional qualfied to prescribe the correct amount of botox to you?
  5. Does the salon professional have adequate insurance to cover themselves if something does go wrong?

If you have used an “at home” beauty treatment, or have visited a beauty salon for treatment, and have suffered an injury as a result of the treatment, you may be entitled to compensation.
