What does ‘fixed fee’ divorce really mean?
The introduction of the online divorce portal has made the process appear more straightforward than ever. Many people now start the process without legal advice, only to realise part-way through that they need professional support.
While the portal makes the process of divorce easier, the financial element connected with divorce should not be forgotten and must be addressed otherwise each parties claims against the other financially remain open.
The process of divorce does not need to be complicated, stressful or costly. Our Fixed Fee Divorce service gives you certainty over the cost, expert legal guidance, and reassurance that the process is handled properly from day one.
Why would people choose a fixed fee divorce?
Our Fixed Fee Divorce service is designed to give you more than just a set price. It provides the support and reassurance you need to approach the process with confidence.
- Certainty of cost
You’ll know exactly what’s included and how much it will cost, so there are no unexpected bills later on.
- Expert guidance when you need it
An experienced family lawyer will explain the divorce process, explaining each stage in straightforward terms and answering your questions along the way.
- Less stress, fewer delays
We’ll handle the process in line with court deadlines, helping you avoid common mistakes that can cause delays and extra costs.
- Clear advice at key points
Some decisions, such as when to apply for the Final Order, can have lasting financial consequences. If it’s better to wait until your finances are resolved, we’ll explain why and guide you through the steps if delaying it would be preferable in your situation.
- Reassurance at a difficult time
You’ll have a supportive team alongside you, so you don’t feel you’re navigating this alone.
So, what does it really mean?
For a fixed fee of £500 + VAT (Please note: These fees do not include the court fee of £612), if you are the applicant we will:
Prepare and submit the divorce or dissolution application to the court.
Communicate with the court and your spouse/civil partner (or their solicitor).
Review your spouse’s/civil partner’s response.
Apply for the Conditional Order (20 weeks after the application is issued).
Apply for the Final Order, formally ending the marriage or civil partnership, when appropriate. We will advise you on the right timing, particularly if your finances are still being resolved.
If you are the Respondent, the fixed fee is £300 + VAT, and includes:
- Reviewing your spouse’s/civil partner’s application.
- Preparing your response.
- Communicating with the court and the other party (or their solicitor).
- Obtaining the Conditional and Final Orders and advising you on both.
Is a fixed fee divorce right for you?
Our fixed fee divorce service is perfect if you're looking for clarity, expert guidance, and the reassurance of knowing your costs upfront.
If your circumstances are more complex, we'll take the time to understand your situation and may recommend a more tailored approach that meets your needs. This may involve an alternative pricing structure, which we'll explain clearly before any work begins, so you can make an informed decision. Either way, we're here to support you every step of the way.
What about finances?
Whether you’re the Applicant or Respondent, our fixed fee includes a one-hour initial meeting to help you understand your financial rights and obligations. We’ll cover:
- What financial claims you and your ex-partner can make.
- The importance of full and frank financial disclosure from both parties.
- Options for reaching agreement, including dispute resolution methods such as mediation.
- How to obtain a legally binding agreement.
- Applying to the court if you are unable to reach an agreement.
It's important to know that divorce doesn’t end your financial ties. Even if you’ve agreed how to divide assets, or don't share any, a Financial Remedy Order will still be needed to prevent future claims. Without one, your ex-partner could make a claim years later.
We will explain your options clearly. If you choose not to deal with financial matters now, we will still complete your divorce, but we will make sure you understand the implications.
Helping you move forward with confidence
Instructing a solicitor doesn’t mean you are intending to head to court. Most of the work we do helps people reach agreement amicably and efficiently, outside of court.
