Join us for this online training session about the role of governors and trustees in the context of SEN and the Equality Act.
Location
In this session, which is aimed at the academies and schools sector, we will provide you with the knowledge to help you understand your duties in the area of Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Disability, and the Equality Act.
We will cover:
- What is SEND?
- The Equality Act 2010 and the Children and Families Act 2010, and the interplay between them
- The duty to make reasonable adjustments - What does this look like in practice?
- Communicating effectively with families on SEND and the importance of the pupil’s voice
- The importance of identifying a pupil with SEN and/or a disability, and how to use the ‘graduated approach’ to respond to that need
- Key elements of good SEN and Disability and Equality policies - governors and trustees should also be familiar with the school’s SEN and Disability policy, and ensure that it is reviewed regularly (working with parents and pupils) to reflect the changing needs of the school community
- Policies and good practice - going further than just the accessibility plan and SEN information report
- Governor and trustee responsibilities vs. the role of SLT, Head and SENCO
- Pupils with other support/medical needs
- Challenges for pupils with SEND, e.g. attendance, inclusion, higher risk of suspensions and exclusions
