New government support package for high-growth businesses

17 Jun 2026

The government has announced a package of measures aimed at helping high-growth businesses expand in the UK, including a visa reimbursement scheme.

Background

The government has published details of a new growth initiative designed to support innovative, fast-growing businesses and encourage them to scale within the UK.

The measures are targeted primarily at businesses operating in sectors such as technology, life sciences and clean energy. A key theme running through the initiative is improving access to international talent and reducing some of the practical barriers faced by rapidly expanding organisations.

What is the visa reimbursement scheme?

Perhaps the most significant of the reforms is the introduction of a visa fee reimbursement scheme for eligible scale-up businesses.

Under the scheme, qualifying employers in specified sectors will be able to recover up to £5,000 of visa-related costs for each international hire and their dependants, subject to an annual funding cap of £25,000.

A scale-up enterprise is a business that grows by more than 20% per year in either staff numbers or turnover over three consecutive years, starting with at least 10 employees. Eligible applicants must apply through specific immigration routes, including Skilled Worker, Global Talent, or Scale-up Worker, and meet detailed criteria, such as sponsor licence and sector eligibility requirements.

The scheme aims to lower the costs associated with hiring international talent - which have risen considerably in recent years - while enhancing the UK's appeal to skilled workers and investors. Funding for the reimbursement scheme is limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received, and grants will be awarded until the total budget is fully utilised.

Applications will open on 16 June 2026, although eligible visa costs incurred on or after 9 June 2026 may be reimbursed.
