MedCity unveils thriving future for life sciences in London

on Wednesday, 09 October 2024.

MedCity has revealed an exciting vision for London as the premier global destination for life science - that brings together world leading research, an exceptional health system, a thriving commercial ecosystem and first class talent.

On the cusp of tremendous growth and opportunity, MedCity, part of London and Partners, recently revealed its ambitious vision for the City's future at the world-renowned Francis Crick Institute. Angela Kukula, the MedCity CEO, led an esteemed panel of speakers at the event including support from the London Mayor's Office. The event had a real buzz and the vision marked a pivotal moment for London's life sciences community, explaining bold ambitions. At its heart is a new website.

The city is already one of the leading life sciences locations in the world, but by 2032 it will add an impressive 6.2 million square feet of lab space and create 80,000 new direct jobs in the industry. These are huge numbers.

Amongst the highlights are:

  • World-Leading Research - London boasts three of the top 15 global universities for clinical and health research
  • An Exceptional Healthcare System - The city has more specialist hospitals and services than any other European location, making it a leader in implementing innovation
  • A Thriving Commercial Ecosystem - With a sector turnover already reaching £11.6 billion, London’s commercial life sciences landscape is thriving, providing fertile ground for companies to innovate and grow.
  • First-Class Talent Pipeline - Every year, 75,000 students in science and medicine fields enrol in London’s institutions, ensuring a continual influx of fresh talent for the sector
  • Supportive Business Environment - The UK’s corporation tax rate of 19%, the lowest in the G20, makes London an attractive place for life sciences businesses to operate and thrive
  • A Global Financial Centre - London’s financial centre enables £1 billion in venture capital funding directed toward health and life sciences
  • A Tapestry of Collaboration - The UK ranks first in the world for the share of internationally co-authored research publications, highlighting the collaborative nature of its research ecosystem
  • National and International Connectivity - With London being just two hours away from mainland Europe by train, the city is perfectly positioned for international collaboration and partnerships
  • A Vibrant, Global Metropolis - London has been named the world’s best city since 2016, and in 2024 it topped the charts for culture. This cultural richness adds to its appeal for talent from across the globe
  • A Legacy of Innovation - London has a 400-year history of pioneering innovation in medicine and research, further establishing its reputation as a global leader
