Is a successful personal injury claim only about the money?
When someone says they have had a successful personal injury claim, what does this means? Does it mean they have received money? Yes, possibly. However, while compensation is, of course, a key part of the process, it’s far from the whole story. For many, the true value of a claim goes well beyond money in the bank.
What does compensation cover?
When you bring a personal injury claim, you are entitled to claim compensation for your pain, suffering and loss of amenity. You are also entitled to claim for out-of-pocket expenses. These can include:
- Past losses, such as lost earnings or treatment costs already incurred.
- Future losses, such as income you’ll no longer earn if you’re unable to return to your pre-injury role or if your career prospects have been affected.
- Longer-term impacts, like a reduced pension pot due to time off work.
As I often say to clients: no amount of money will ever make up for what has happened. Compensation will not take away the pain or give you back the memories you've missed out on, for example, that holiday you couldn't take. Money, however, may help people make some new memories, once they have received their compensation.
Bringing a claim for a personal injury due to a third party's negligence is so much more than just receiving compensation.
What are the unseen benefits?
There are often unexpected positives that come from pursuing a claim, and these can be just as important as the financial outcome.
For example, our clients are often seen by medical experts who are experts in their particular field, who they may not ordinarily have access to on the NHS due to geographical location or funding.
In many cases, clients can claim for treatment that is recommended on a private basis. Given the well-known NHS waiting times (with 7.3 million cases on the list as of early 2026, and over 2.7 million patients waiting more than 18 weeks), having access to private treatment can make a life-changing difference. Being able to receive treatment quickly and at a time that suits you can mean a faster recovery, reduced stress, and a greater sense of control. This can be worth more than any amount of money to some of my clients.
Seeing leading medical experts can sometimes result in clients being able to access treatment which may not have even been suggested by their treating consultants or be available on the NHS due to restrictions on funding.
Looking ahead and supporting you along the way
In addition to claiming for private treatment whilst the claim is ongoing, we can also claim the future cost of treatment on a private basis, where that is likely to be needed. This ensures that even once a claim is settled, you have the financial support in place to continue to access private treatment. Having the financial resources to do so at a later date gives clients peace of mind.
We can also obtain on some occasions obtain an early part payment of compensation for clients whilst their cases are ongoing, which can help to take the financial pressure off them.
Pursuing a personal injury claim is about so much more than just compensation. It’s about recognising the harm that’s been done, accessing the care you need, and giving yourself the best chance of moving forward.
