Schools admissions training for academies and schools
This practical training session is designed to give schools, academies and multi-academy trusts a comprehensive grounding in admissions law. Helping you to prepare for the year ahead.
What will this training cover?
This session will guide you through the statutory codes and relevant legislation, including the upcoming changes introduced by the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026 and what these mean for your school. You'll gain a clear understanding of your responsibilities as an Admission Authority, from preparing compliant admission arrangements to managing the full cycle of consultation, determination, publication as well as how to compliantly vary determined admission arrangements.
We'll also cover the practical side of admissions, from administering applications in the normal round and in-year admissions, to handling objections to the Office of the Schools Adjudicator and admission of children with challenging behaviour or those who have been twice excluded. The session will also include a summary of the appeals process (this session is not intended as training for panel members or clerks).
Who should attend this training?
Admission authorities, including Boards of Trustees and Governing Bodies, carry significant legal responsibilities under the statutory codes, with most admissions tasks needing to be completed annually. We recommend beginning this process before the end of the school year in July, giving you ample time to implement decisions before the summer break.
