AI is transforming industries, reshaping business practices, and introducing new legal considerations. As organisations integrate AI into their operations, they face evolving regulatory requirements, ethical concerns, and contractual complexities.

We are able to advise on a full range of AI related matters. Our specialist AI lawyers stay at the forefront of policy and regulatory developments, which are impacting businesses decisions for the supply and use of AI. Its adoption brings with it significant challenges for businesses, from data protection, to its influence on commercial contracts, and intellectual property risks, but we are here to support you along this journey.

Our expertise

Our AI lawyers can assist clients with:

AI in our work

Advising on AI is one thing, adopting it into our working practices another. We have embraced AI into our business systems and legal services. Not as a bolt-on afterthought, but as a growing part of how we support clients.

We use and continue to pilot AI to assist with legal research, dictation, compliance, case management and drafting, as well as our own in-house products in development. Through this, we aim to be more efficient and responsive, reduce cost and improve the way existing systems work. This allows your legal spend to be on time personalising services to your needs. However, AI is a tool, not a substitute. We will not compromise on the human interactions and assurance that they give, maintaining the strictest standards of confidentiality.

This new technology can help people everywhere improve their lives. At the same time, the world needs to establish the rules of the road so that any downsides of artificial intelligence are far outweighed by its benefits, and so that everyone can enjoy those benefits, no matter where they live or how much money they have. The Age of AI is filled with opportunities and responsibilities.

Our work highlights

1

RIPJAR

In 2019, we advised a tech start-up that developed AI-driven solutions to enrich web-scraped data and provide financial risk scores to multinational clients, including banks and financial institutions. This involved processing large volumes of personal data, including information on criminal offences, to help combat international financial crime and streamline client onboarding processes. As the regulatory framework for AI and large-scale data processing has evolved, we have continued to advise the company, ensuring they remain compliant.

2

Ed Tech Start up

Advising an Ed Tech Start up on the data protection implementations of its solutions that involved using AI to support student learning and safeguarding. This included assessing data controllership responsibilities, ensuring compliance with evolving regulations, and implementing a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) to identify and mitigate risks. Our work also involved helping the client establish robust data governance practices, enabling them to manage privacy risks effectively.

3

Isambard-AI

Supporting the development of the AI research resource "Isambard-AI", hosted by the University of Bristol and accessible to organisations across the UK for research.  Our role involved addressing legal and regulatory matters, including procurement, grant funding, supply chain management for delivery of the facility, as well as tackling legal, charitable, governance, and regulatory considerations essential for the University's hosting responsibilities.
