Department of Education (DofE) guidance on supporting gender questioning children was published on Tuesday 19 December 2023. The guidance is based around 5 core principles and offers schools a useful checklist for decision making as well as advice on specific issues such as single sex spaces and pronouns.
The guidance is non-statutory and applies to all schools. It has been published in draft for public consultation, which will run to the 12 March 2024, but we think that schools can reasonably have regard to it in their decision making in the meantime. Schools can now read the guidance and respond to the consultation. The final guidance will be published later next year.
If you have any questions about the guidance or need advice on any of these issues, please contact James Garside on 0117 314 5639.
