What is a notary public?
A notary public is a specialist lawyer authorised to authenticate and certify documents, typically for international use. Unlike standard legal certifications, notarial acts carry official weight with foreign governments, courts and institutions around the world. Whether you are relocating abroad, buying property overseas, getting married in another country or dealing with an international estate having correctly notarised documents is essential.
Notarial services provided by a notary public are regulated through the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
How can our notary public team help you?
VWV can support you with the following notary services:
The legal systems of the different states of the United States of America often require documents used for the transfer or conveyance of property, documentation related to mortgages and finance, letters of authorisation or consent and many others to be formally notarised. For some states, however, it is necessary to complete an additional step known as legalisation after notarisation. This involves submitting the document to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) so that they can attach an Apostille' a certificate confirming the signature and seal of the notary. As a Notary Public and experts in cross-border law, we can review all the relevant paperwork and liaise with the FCO on your behalf, ensuring that all relevant documentation is legally recognised in the USA.
Some official UK documents, such as sponsorship letters, financial documents and powers of attorney have to be translated in order to comply with another country's legal system. When a translation needs to be presented to a government authority or is needed in the context of an official or administrative procedure, there will usually be a requirement to present a certified translation. We can notarise, authenticate and witness documents for UK study, getting married abroad or registering an overseas branch of a UK company. We can also liaise with lawyers, embassies, consulates and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office as part of our many notarial services.
There are specific legal requirements that must be met by visitors to and from the UK to establish that you are a genuine visitor planning a visit for not longer than the period that you state. A Letter of Sponsorship is also required with many applications for overseas education programmes as the education provider will be providing accommodation for the duration. We can notarise sponsorship letters and the official documents needed for studying abroad and for visitors to the UK. We can also provide translated versions for all parties where requested.

Our work highlights
Family Law - International Adoption
Explaining to the French authorities by means of a Notarial Certificate the criteria considered by the English courts when making adoption orders in respect of two minors so as to enable the English adoption orders to be recognised in France.
Estate Administration - Partial Intestacy
The deceased signed an English Will (drafted online) which was limited to their assets located in the United Kingdom. This meant that the deceased's assets in Guernsey were not covered by the Will, creating a partial intestacy (this arises where assets owned by the deceased are not covered by a Will). The Probate Registry in Guernsey required a certificate of law signed by our Notary explaining the intestacy rules of England and Wales so that they could determine who was entitled to administer the Guernsey estate.
Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)
A court in France required a notarised and Apostilled copy of an English LPA, together with a notarial certificate explaining the powers granted, in order to enable the incapacitated person's son (as LPA Attorney) to manage his affairs in France and ultimately sell his property in France.
FAQs
A notary public can authenticate a wide range of personal documents, including powers of attorney, copies of identity documents, qualifications, marriage and birth certificates and property-related paperwork. They verify the identity of the person signing, confirm the authenticity of the document and apply their official seal, making the document legally recognised overseas.
It depends on the country where your document will be used. Our team can advise you on the specific requirements for your jurisdiction and help you obtain an apostille where needed. Occasionally it's necessary to arrange legalisation by an embassy as well (eg for UAE) and we can arrange this too.
The cost of notarial services varies depending on the type of document, the complexity of the matter and the number of documents involved. We are happy to provide a clear fee estimate once we understand your requirements. Please get in touch with our team to discuss your needs.
The time needed depends on the nature of your documents and whether legalisation by an Embassy or simply an apostille is required. We will give you a realistic timeline when you first contact us so you can plan accordingly.
