The Acas campaign aims to equip employers with practical advice and resources to help create more inclusive workplaces where neurodivergent individuals can thrive. It highlights the importance of inclusive recruitment practices, such as adapting interviews and assessments to accommodate different cognitive styles, and encourages employers to consider tailored reasonable adjustments - for example, flexible working arrangements or assistive technology.
A key theme of the campaign is workplace awareness. Acas is encouraging employers to educate staff about neurodivergence to reduce stigma and promote a culture of acceptance. Further information is available here.
Running until summer 2025, the new DWP expert panel will gather evidence on how employment outcomes for neurodivergent people can be improved. The panel will consider barriers to recruitment, retention and progression, the impact of intersecting factors such as social deprivation, gender and ethnicity, and the role of government policy in driving systemic change. It will also explore the economic benefits of greater neurodiversity in the workforce and identify effective actions employers can take to enhance inclusion.
The panel’s recommendations are expected to inform both workplace practices and future government policy.
While there is currently no legal obligation to take specific steps in this area, Acas has made clear that employers should prepare for increasing expectations around inclusive hiring, reasonable adjustments, and awareness training. The panel's findings may also lead to further guidance or policy developments later this year.
