Future of Work Review Announced

on Thursday, 26 May 2022.

Following the omission of the Employment Bill from the Queen's Speech, the Government has announced Matt Warman MP will lead a review into how it can best support a thriving future UK labour market.

The Government has announced a review into the future of the UK labour market. The review aims to build on existing commitments, including those stemming from the Taylor Review. It will examine how the future labour market can best be shaped, with the effects of the pandemic, Brexit and the Levelling Up White Paper in mind.

The review will be undertaken in two stages, with the first stage constituting a high level assessment of key strategic issues on the future of work. Stage two will provide a more detailed assessment of a selection of those issues, focusing on areas where policy is least developed, the least consensus exists or the size of opportunity for change is the greatest.

Key points to be considered include the importance of local labour markets in facilitating access to good jobs, the role of automation and building on the good flexibility created by the gig economy whilst balancing the need for those workers to have sufficient protections.

The review will be conducted over this coming spring and summer, with a report to follow. It remains to be seen how the review will impact the delayed Employment Bill.
