Government Launches Review on Modern Employment Practices

on Friday, 13 January 2017.

The Independent Review of Employment Practices in the Modern Economy (also known as The Taylor Review) was launched on 30 November 2016.

The purpose of the review is to obtain information that will inform the government's future industrial strategy.

The review will look at how employment practices will need to change in order to keep up with modern business models. In particular, it will consider the effect that the modernisation of working practices, such as the 'gig economy', is having on the rights and responsibilities of workers. It will also look at employer freedoms and obligations.

A regional tour will be carried out as part of the review to obtain the views of employers and workers from across the country and in various sectors.

Matthew Taylor, who is leading the review, commented:

"I am delighted to announce the other members of the review team; they bring a wealth of experience and insight to our work. We have a lot of research and policy to discuss but the most important part of our process is getting out and about to talk to businesses and workers across Britain about their experiences of modern work.

"As well as making specific recommendations I hope the review will promote a national conversation and explore how we can all contribute to work that provides opportunity, fairness and dignity."

The government is also launching a research project into the gig economy to establish the scale of these types of working practices and understand why such work is attractive to the people who engage with it. The gig economy has come under much scrutiny recently in relation to the treatment of those who work within it, culminating with the well-publicised decision that Uber drivers are considered to be workers and therefore entitled to workers' rights.
