ABPI President Asks New UK Prime Minister to Do More to Support Pharma

on Wednesday, 14 September 2022.

The UK Government must do more to support pharma to see Boris Johnson's promise to make Britain a science superpower by 2030, come to fruition. That's the call to action from Pinder Sahota, President of the Association of British Pharmaceutical Industry.

The industry is currently having to deal with shortages of talent, rising costs and falling investment, he said. Despite the challenges and rising costs, medicine prices cannot rise so the industry is having to absorb inflation pressures.

In light of hot competition from other countries, he has also called for increased spending on medicines and pharma research and development.

He also called for the Government to help address the shortage of talent, notably with data scientists and engineers.

Looking to the future, Mr Sahota said there was much to be gained from the next Cabinet focusing on realising the science superpower promise. He said: "If we can encourage more research and manufacturing to be done here in the UK… Then that has a positive impact on improving the health of the nation and workforce productivity."
