Rising Number of Deaths Due to Antibiotic Resistance May Exceed Breast Cancer Fatality Rates

on Monday, 16 January 2017.

The Department of Health's estimation of 5,000 deaths a year from drug resistance is less than half the number it should be, according to Dr Ron Daniels, Chief Executive of the UK Sepsis Trust.

Figures provided to The Bureau of Investigative Journalism by Dr Daniels show that it should be closer to 12,000 and the Government's use of results from studies in Europe and America to estimate the number of deaths fails to accurately reflect the correct position.

Instead, the Trust wants to see the Department of Health introduce an official register of superbug deaths so that the true statistics can be seen and these figures taken into account by the Government when making policy decisions.

If the figure of 12,000 deaths is confirmed, this would put deaths due to antibiotic resistance above the number of deaths due to breast cancer, which was just over 11,000 in 2014.
