Here Come the Monkeys - Scientific Breakthrough Helps Restore Use of Paralysed Limbs

on Monday, 16 January 2017.

Scientists in Switzerland have successfully treated two rhesus monkeys which each had one leg paralysed due to a partial spinal cord lesion using new technology to allow them to walk once more.

The technology comprised the introduction of a neuroprosthetic interface. The interface connects the brain and the spine without the use of wires and allows the monkey's brain to stimulate neural pathways which then activate the leg muscles and bridge the gap made by the original lesion. This technology therefore allows the monkeys to once again control the use of their legs through neural stimulation.

Although the technology has a long way to go in order to be used in human subjects, it is hoped that this could one day be used allow paralysed patients the chance to walk again using their own neural stimulations.
