During the seminar, we will focus on solutions for housing our elderly population including retirement living, co-housing and dementia-friendly communities.

Our guest speakers will include:

Sam Goss is the Founding Director of Bristol based RIBA Chartered Practice Barefoot Architects. Sam is a registered architect, and holds Dual First class Honours degree in Architecture and Landscape, from the University of Sheffield. Within the practice Sam leads on a wide variety of projects across sectors and scales, with extensive experience in community-led projects. His interest and experience is in sustainable, low energy, low impact architecture based upon strategic, creative thinking, and appropriate technologies. With over 10 years of working experience as a project architect he has successfully delivered a range of award winning community, housing, and education projects ranging from £500k to £13.5m. Before establishing the practice Sam worked for multi-award winning practices Architype in London, and FCB Studios in Bath. He is currently leading on a number of community housing projects and innovative homes within the practice.

Carole Sawyers, Chief Executive of The Brendoncare Foundation, a charity for older people based in Winchester. Brendoncare runs 10 care homes, 4 housing with care services and more than 90 friendship and social clubs, across the South of England. Over 600 staff and 500 volunteers provide care services, run clubs and support Brendoncare services. Prior to joining Brendoncare in 2014, Carole had been Chief Executive of The Fremantle Trust since 2002. Her professional background is as a Chartered Accountant and she was a Senior Manager in the audit department of Ernst & Young prior to joining The Fremantle Trust as Director of Finance when the charity was established in 1992. Through her roles with Fremantle and Brendoncare Carole has been a Board Member and Honorary Treasurer of The National Care Forum and was also on the Board of Your Care Rating during the set up phase. 

Caryn Donahue leads Cushman & Wakefield’s new retirement living service, based in London but with a national remit. Caryn is an established broker in the retirement living market who recently relocated from the firm’s Boston office in the United States, where she worked on the Senior Housing Capital Markets / Equity, Debt and Structured Finance team. During her tenure at C&W, Caryn has arranged $900 million of senior housing asset sales and over $200 million of senior housing equity and debt transactions throughout the US. Prior to her time with Cushman & Wakefield, Caryn worked for J.P. Morgan in New York.

Bridport Cohousing - a Place to Grow 
A presentation discussing the UK's largest and only 100% affordable cohousing project in Bridport, West Dorset. The project has been led by older members of the community and will provide 54 homes for a mutually supportive low impact intentional community for retirees and young families.

Brendoncare’s newest service is an innovative dementia care scheme near Winchester – this £15m development is designed to support couples where one partner is living with dementia and also provides nursing and dementia care services.
 
Lessons from the US Senior Housing Market 
A discussion on the key attributes of the far more advanced US senior housing market including retirement housing for rent and the continuum of care.
