Employment and EAT Judges Should No Longer Be Referred to as 'Sir' and 'Madam' During Tribunal Hearings.

on Friday, 16 December 2022.

The Lord Chief Justice and the Senior President of Tribunals have announced a new way in which Employment Judges are to be addressed.

On 1 December 2022, the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Burnett of Maldon, and the Senior President of Tribunals, Sir Keith Lindblom, announced that employment judges and judges sitting in the EAT should simply be addressed in hearings as 'Judge' as opposed to 'Sir' or 'Madam'.

The announcement stated that the decision was made with the aim of moving towards more modern and simpler terminology.

It is worth noting that the change only affects the way in which judges are addressed during a hearing. It does not affect judicial titles or the way in which judges record their decision.

Non-legal panel members sitting in Employment Tribunal Hearings should continue to be addressed as ‘Sir or Madam’.
