Employment Tribunal Quarterly Statistics Revealed

on Friday, 24 March 2017.

The number of claims being brought in the employment tribunal is now relatively stable...

...save for multiple claims which tend to be distorted by group actions involving large numbers of employees from one particular workplace, according to the latest quarterly statistics published by the Ministry of Justice for the period from October to December 2016.

It will be interesting to see whether the figures get shaken up again when the Employment Tribunal Service is integrated into the wider court system under forthcoming reforms.

Claims Brought

The number of single claims brought in the employment tribunals increased by 3% compared with the same quarter in 2015.

The number of multiple claims increased by 65% (as we have said, this figure is distorted by group litigation against a single employer).

Disposals

The total number of claims disposed of by the tribunals was 10,922, an increase of 8% compared with the same period in 2015. Of these, 37% were settled via Acas, 16% were withdrawn and only 5% were successful at hearing. The remaining 42% appear to have been unsuccessful at hearing.

Remission Applications

Around 60% of remission applications (ie. applications by claimants to be excused from paying the fees necessary to issue claims and attend a hearing) were granted.
