The current whistleblowing framework aims to protect employees who disclose information about a wrongdoing at work. The intention is to protect whistleblowers from reprisal, and therefore to encourage workers to speak out if they become aware of wrongdoing.
The law on whistleblowing is complex. Workers who blow the whistle qualify for protection against dismissal and detriment as a result. They do not require any minimum length of service in order to bring a claim. However, the protection only applies in respect of limited categories of disclosure made in prescribed ways.
The review is being led by the Department for Business and Trade. It will examine the efficacy of the current framework. It will consider how the framework currently operates, including:
