Vast Majority of the Employment Tribunal Issue Fees Paid Outright
The Ministry of Justice has published statistics for all types of tribunal claims from April to June 2015. The report shows a continued decrease in the number of claims compared to last year.
There were 5,412 employment tribunal issue fees requested for this period.
- 68% were paid outright.
- 21% were awarded either a full or partial issue fee remission (meaning they did not have to pay depending on whether they received certain state benefits or whether their gross monthly income was below the threshold). This is a 3% increase from the same period last year.
- 11% were not taken further. It is possible some of these have not yet progressed through the system.
Other interesting statistics include:
- There were 12,563 new Employment Tribunal claims from April to June 2015. This is now the lowest quarterly figure on record and has declined by 38% since the last quarter.
- In 2014/15, there were 1,129 claims that received compensation for unfair dismissal. The maximum award was £238,216, but the average award was £12,362.
- The Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT) received 1,207 appeals (30% less than in 2013/14) and disposed of 1,340 appeals (20% less than last year).
- The majority of EAT appeals were disposed of because the appeal was rejected.
